Day Tour to Alamein & Alexandria

Itinerary:

After Breakfast at your Hotel your Golden Pyramid Travel Tour Guide will collect you to travel to Alamein. Alamein is situated 106 kilometres West of Alexandria and 240 kilometres Northwest of Cairo. This site is where the Battle of El Alamein was fought primarily between two outstanding Commanders of World War II; Montgomery & Rommel

Here you can visit the El Alamein war Cemetery which contains graves of the men who died during the Western Desert campaigns, and especially those who died in the battle of  El Alamein at the end of October 1942. You will also visit the Military Museum which displays weapons, tanks and other military issued paraphernalia 

You will continue on your Tour to Alexandria. Here you will visit Pompeys’ pillar, which measures 20.46 m in height with a diametre of 2.71 m at its base. This was dedicated in honour to Emperor Diocletian dating back to the 4th Century

The Qaitbay Citadel will be the next stop on your Tour. The Citadel was erected on the exact site of the famous Lighthouse of Alexandria and is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World which was built on the order from its founder, the Sultan Al-Ashraf Abou Anasr Saif El-Din Qaitbay El-Jerkasy (1468-1496 AD) , its construction is of Military design to raise the protection of Egypt against the Turkish attacks during the times of Mameluke Qaitbay

Your last Tour Stop for the day will be at the Catacombs of Kom Elsogafa. The Catacombs design is like the Christian Catacomb in Rome and is the largest Roman Cemetery, it consists of 3 levels cut into the rock underground, and its entrance leads to a spiral staircase which leads off to different hall and wells. The Tombs show scenes that are a combination of Ancient Egyptian, Roman and Greek Art that date back to 1st and 4th centuries. One of the most important sites was one that belongs to Emperor Karkla, this contains the bones of human and horses
