Drive from Cairo to the historical city of Alexandria, the capital of Greco-roman Egypt for over a thousand years. Alexandria turns its back to the rest of Egypt to face the Mediterranean Sea extending about 32km along the coast of the sea. During your tour, you will smell the sea breeze, listen to the crashing sound of waves, Enjoy the stunning view of the sea and also explore the most remarkable landmarks of Alexandria including the new Library of Alexandria “Bibliotheca Alexandrina”, the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, Qaitbay citadel and Pompay’s Pillar.
Our representative will pick you up from your hotel in Cairo then you will be transferred to Alexandria in 3 hours by an A/C van.
You will have an optional stop in the mid-way for rest. And you will be given full information about the history of Alexandria by your expert tour guide.
Upon arrival at Alexandria You will start your tour with a visit to Pompay’s Pillar that was made on the honor of the emperor Diocletian during the 3rd century. The pillar was a part of the Serapis Temple that was famous for having the daughter library of Alexandria.
Lunch will be served in a good quality local restaurant in the city and close to the Mediterranean.
Then move on to the famous old Roman Catacombs of Kom Ashoqafa, considered as one of the seven medieval wonders of the world and the largest known roman burial site in Egypt. The Catacombs are cut out of rock in the shape of circular shaft including three levels with a spiral staircase to a depth of about 35m with features unlike that of any other catacomb in the ancient world. The decorations inside the tombs combine between the ancient Egyptian and the ancient Roman art.
Then move on to visit Alexandria library “Bibliotheca Alexandrina”, a reimagining of Alexandria’s ancient Great Library that was the most important center of learning and science for 600 years until it was burned down. The modern library was designed by a Norwegian architect at a total cost of 220 millions$ and opened to the public in 2002.it takes the shape of a rising sun and intended to hold 8 million books in its vast space.
Then move on to Qaitbey Fort, the former site of the legendary light house of Alexandria. .the fort was built to defend Egypt from the advance of the ottoman empire. From the top of the citadel, you will have a Stunning sea views with a foreground of small fishing boats and in the distance, the sun- like disk of the new library.
At the end of the tour you will return to Cairo Airport for your flight back to Sharm El Sheikh.
Upon arrival at Sharm El Sheikh, you will be transferred to your hotel by a private air- conditioned modern vehicle.
